WHAT (WHO) IS SYNTHONIE
SYNTHONIE is a futuristic music project – where artificial intelligence meets human imagination.
We perform live at gaming, sci-fi, comic conventions and tech fairs, blending cinematic soundscapes with cutting-edge technology.
Created by award-winning tech-musician Chris from SYNTHONIE – officially endorsed by Arts Council England 2025 – the project combines:
- AI-generated vocals and drums (custom-built)
- A glowing instrument of extraterrestrial design
- Interactive VR experiences and sound explorations
- A bold artistic vision shaped by 20+ years in computer engineering

What sets us apart is the fusion of cutting-edge technology and dynamic live performance. Our custom-built instrument, the Musitar, can simulate a wide range of sounds and has been part of our show since 2020.
Adding to the experience is our AI character Syndarella, who appears in projected visuals and brings an extra layer of sci-fi energy and emotion to the stage.

Influenced by Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner 2049, Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, Warhammer 40K, and The Expanse, our work is a tribute to the stories that shaped our imagination. We channel the mystery, emotion, and raw wonder of these worlds into our compositions – aiming to evoke the same haunting beauty and sense of epic scale.
Chris is also a recognised virtual reality expert, offering immersive VR workshops for schools, universities, businesses, and cultural organisations. With deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience, he is passionate about making VR accessible and inspiring – whether for beginners exploring the basics or professionals aiming to expand their skills. His workshops are tailored to showcase the true potential of Virtual Reality – not just as a tool, but as a medium for innovation, education, and emotional connection.

Chris Freund is the founder and composer of SYNTHONIE – a visionary music project blending science fiction, gaming culture, and cutting-edge technology.
His performances merge cinematic soundscapes with custom-built instruments, AI, and immersive storytelling.
He is the creator of the Musitar (a multi-functional performance instrument) and the AI Syndarella, featured in both his live shows and virtual reality workshops.
Chris also specialises in VR and AI-based music workshops for schools, universities, and companies – combining decades of tech expertise with a passion for creative education.
He is also the developer of the sci-fi game series I AM DIFFERENT.
In 2025, he was officially endorsed by Arts Council England as an internationally recognised Global Talent. He now lives in Birmingham and works across the UK as a Sci-Fi, Gaming & Tech musician and expert.
Chris has been recommended by major partners including Microsoft, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Deutsche Telekom Foundation, Native Instruments, Animeleague UK, and ReedPop (MCM, EGX, New York Comic Con) – all recognising his unique fusion of technology and music.
Before becoming a full-time musician, Chris spent over 20 years as a computer engineer, CEO, and lead technician – an experience that deeply shapes his musical approach today. He sees technology not just as a tool, but as a way of life.
He has also provided expert consultation to industry leaders – including Xerox, who integrated his Linux-based solution into their industry printer documentation, and MusicFutures UK, who sought his guidance in AI-driven music creation.
His work has been featured in games, music and tech magazines, on television and radio, and he has headlined major conventions across Europe. His sound has drawn comparisons to Hans Zimmer, Alexander Brandon, Jeremy Soule, Keiichi Okabe, and Jerry Goldsmith.

SYNTHONIE also teaches people around the world how to make music with VR glasses. And we are currently active for youth centres, schools and universities.

SYNTHONIE gives VR workshops for numerous companies, in which he explains, among other things, what the Metaverse is and why it is still bad.
